MYC Sailing Course Description

Novice Class

Novice Level will be the first level of instruction that Moriches Yacht Club offers. The education will be tailored for elementary-age, beginning sailors with little to no sailing ability. Objectives of this class include basic weather knowledge, an introduction to knot tying, tacking vs gybing, and how to operate a sailboat with a crew.

This class will meet Monday – Thursday from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM.

Skipper Class

Skipper Level will be the second level of instruction the Moriches Yacht Club offers. The instruction will be tailored to an upper elementary/early middle school level who has some sailing knowledge. Objectives of this class will include continued learning about tacking/gybing, wind patterns, points of sail, and sailing with a crew. This course also includes an introduction to racing which is held concurrently with Friday Morning Races.

This class will meet Monday – Thursday from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Singlehanded Class

This class will be treated as an introduction to the racing class. Students will exclusively sail single-handed boats and work on racing skills specifically to do with Opti and other singlehanded boats. Students will be under the direction of the Race Coach. In order to enroll in this class, students must have successfully passed the Skipper Class or have special permission from the program director in order to take this class. As a part of this class, students also must participate in Friday Morning Races.

This class will meet Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

Explorers Class

This class will be a lose-level class geared for older middle school/high school students who want to sail around the bay and to various destinations. This class does not have a racing requirement to it, however, racing in Friday Morning Races is highly encouraged.

This class will meet Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

Race Team

The race team is the highest level of sailing instruction offered at Moriches Yacht Club. This class will travel to various yacht clubs during the summer and fall season to compete in different regattas. This class and curriculum will be at the discretion of the race coach. Prerequisites for this course are for sailors to be age thirteen and above, as well as receive special permission from the Race Coach and Program Director to be a part of this team.

This class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.
