Club History

Moriches Yacht Club History

In 1999, Moriches Yacht Club commemorated its 100th Anniversary at the annual Flag Raising Ceremony.

As part of that ceremony, the club recognized the last four active original Charter Members, who in 1949, each donated $100 toward the purchase of the Union Ave property in 1950, and we have been here ever since. Initiated as a sailboat racing club in 1899, Moriches Yacht Club only met in the summer months. Members would host dinners at their homes and local hotels, and following a period of sharing a club, inactive periods, and many attempts to reorganize during the 1920’s and 30’s, Moriches Yacht Club finally had its very own clubhouse on the bay, with the first social event held in 1951.

Moriches Yacht Club has come a long way since its humble beginnings, yet remains true to tradition, fundamentally dedicated to yachting, sportsmanship, sociability, and recreation for its members and their children. Moriches Yacht Club started the 21st century off on a new path when members elected their first female Commodore in the year 2000, and Moriches Yacht Club has not looked back. Today, club members and their guests can enjoy a beautiful three-acre site on Moriches Bay, and a comfortable clubhouse equipped with a dining room, bar, galley, alongside a swimming pool and marina.

MYC long/lat sign

Moriches Yacht Club is a family-oriented club, managed by Flag Officers and Bridge consisting of an elected Commodore, Vice and Rear Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer, and a supporting Board of Directors.

Moriches Yacht Club is an all-volunteer, member participation club, where members serve as chairpersons, responsible for organizing and running social events, the marina, the grounds, and the sailing program. The Entertainment Chair runs numerous social events throughout the year, and members get to enjoy functions from the St. Patrick’s Day Party, Flag Raising, the annual fund-raising Duck BBQ, and monthly Dinner Meetings just to name a few. Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated volunteers, we are continually coming up with new ideas for fun events for the membership to enjoy. There is also a commitment to the children of the club, with numerous children’s events planned, and a Junior Yacht Club. The saying, “the more you put into Moriches Yacht Club, the more you get out of it” rings as true today as it did in the past.

Whether you are sailor, boater or landlubber, Moriches Yacht Club provides activities, social events, sailing and swimming lessons and best of all, a place on the bay for you!

Moriches Yacht Club has remained committed to promoting an active sailing club, with a strong tradition of enriching our sailing program which includes sailing lessons for children and adults.

Like other activities at Moriches Yacht Club, sailboat racing had a period of inactivity in the past, but in 1966, members took steps to reignite the summer program with the first Commodore’s Cup, and we have continued to build on this lasting tradition. Today, Moriches Yacht Club has a racing program that includes numerous cup races for open classes and junior racing. We also host sailing regattas and the MYC Fall Series. Moriches Yacht Club is a member of the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association and the Flying Scot Sailing Association, Fleet 10.

Moriches Yacht Club has a strong Flying Scot sailboat fleet; however, members also sail and race Sunfish, 420’s, Optimists, and boats of other classes. In 1999, Moriches Yacht Club received a letter from a gentleman living in California, who happened to read something about Moriches Yacht Club celebrating its centennial anniversary. It just so happened that he had a trophy that his great uncle won in a regatta hosted by Moriches Yacht Club in 1902! That trophy, along with various other racing trophies, is proudly on display in the trophy case at Moriches Yacht Club, a testament to our fine sailing tradition.

Swimming Pool

MYC swimming pool

In 1966, Moriches Yacht Club added a swimming pool for members to enjoy during the summer months.

Today, the swimming pool and its surrounding patio and deck are coveted spots for members take in the beautiful views of Moriches Bay. Additionally, Moriches Yacht Club offers swimming lessons programs, accommodating all skill levels.

Whether it is boating or sailing, social events, the pool, youth programs, or simply enjoying the waterfront property on Moriches Bay, Moriches Yacht Club remains the best deal in town, providing you a place to share fun times with other members, family, and friends.
