Sailing Information

Sail With Moriches Yacht Club!

No matter your level of sailing knowledge or competitiveness, Moriches Yacht Club has a sailing lesson for you.

Club or loaner boats are available for a small fee, and One Design Sailing offers a great way to learn the sport of sailing while making friends at the MYC. We have active fleets of Optimists, 420s, Lasers, Sunfish, and Flying Scots.

Junior Sailing Program

It is the mission of the MYC Junior Sailing Program to create a safe and fun learning environment for all junior sailors. Our goal is to instill a love and admiration for the pastime of sailing by encouraging youthful members to experience the joys of both competitive and recreational sailing. By teaching essential elements like boat handling, seamanship, and racing, our junior sailors are taught to respect the sea while learning the values of teamwork. Provided with the highest level of instruction, the MYC Sailing Program fosters an environment that promotes cooperative learning, and good sportsmanship. All MYC Instructors are required to be certified in US Sailing, CPR, First Aid, and have a current NYS power boat certification. All children must meet the requirements for swimming abilities required by the Sailing Program.

sailboats racing

Fleet Racing

The MYC sponsors fleet racing on various days throughout the year. During the summer and fall seasons, there are several races every week. Junior sailing regattas are every Friday morning from July to mid-August, while more advanced racing is open to all every Wednesday evening during our Summer Series. See the calendar for more Regattas and Cup Races.

Jr. Sailing Race Team

The Jr. Sailing Race team is for children who have demonstrated mastery of the sailing fundamentals and have completed crew classes, looking to take their passion for sailing to a new level. As a member of the Jr. Sailing Race Team, you will continue to refine boat handling and sail trim skills, while gaining more knowledge in the use of the Racing Rules including:

  • Starting
  • Mark Rounding
  • Tacking
  • Gybing
  • Boat-for-Boat tactics

Race Team members will also learn to recognize and take advantage of weather and wind changes to improve their competitive position.

While focused on the Optimist Dinghy or Club 420, Race Team participants will be exposed to a variety of dinghies and boats to further broaden their knowledge and skill set. Race Team formally meets in the afternoons Monday through Friday, and race opportunities can include Friday travel Regattas and evening racing on Wednesdays.

Race team participants may also have opportunities, if desired, to serve as Junior Instructors with the morning classes.

adult sailing lessons

Adult Sailing Lessons

It is never too late to learn to sail, which is why in addition to its youth sailing program, the MYC offers sailing lessons specifically for adults on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Like the youth program, adults will work with MYC instructors, being taught all the skills necessary to confidently handle a sailboat on the water. These lessons are taught in our club Flying Scots.

Previous sailing experiences is not required. While club membership is encouraged for adult sailing students, it is not mandatory and, but membership does include a discounted rate.
